World Ethanol Imports 2014

Ethanol imports decreased from 7.9 bln litres in 2013 to 6.9 bln litres in 2014. US imports decreased from 2 bln litres to 917 mln litres, leaving Canada as the world’s largest importer of fuel ethanol for the first time ever. US imports from Brazil more than halved due to favourable domestic prices and uncertainty around the fate of the RFS programme. EU fuel ethanol imports continued to decrease in 2014. In fact, exports exceeded imports for the first time ever.

In 2014, world ethanol shipments fell from 7.8 bln litres to 7 bln litres, lead by Brazil's sinking exports, which decreased from 2.9 bln litres to 1.3 bln litres, the lowest level in a decade. On the contrary, US exports hit the second highest level on record of 3.2 bln litres. In Asia, Pakistan remains the leading exporter with 506 mln litres freighted, mainly toward China. Thailand’s increasing consumption lead to decreasing exports, from 110 mln litres to 19 mln litres.
