World sugar production rose by 4.6 mln tonnes in 2014 to a record 172.4 mln tonnes, tel quel. Despite a considerable drop in output in Brazil (-2.0 mln tonnes from 2013), China (-0.6 mln tonnes) and Thailand (-0.5 mln tonnes), the new all-time high was made possible by a subtantial increase in India and Pakistan (+3.1 mln tonnes and +0.9 mln tonnes) as well as a recovery in the EU (+1.5 mln tonnes).
